When I was a kid we didn’t have cable… ya I sound like one of those old men who say, “when I was a kid we walked 12 miles to school with no shoes on.” It’s true though guys! My parents had an antenna (aluminum foil and all)!
So now that I’m grown, I think to myself.. should I get cable? I want it, yes. I just don’t want to pay for it! It’s so expensive! When we had DirecTV we paid almost $100/month PLUS, my husband had to HAVE Sunday Ticket. Yes, I blame my husband, but I’m a football fan myself.
Here are some ideas I’ve researched for you and your family to save a few bucks each month, and watch your favorite shows.
Not only can you watch movies on Netflix, you can also watch your favorite shows from multiple networks. They also offer Netflix Originals which are great, and you can’t find them anywhere else. With Netflix you don’t have to sign a contract, you can watch anywhere and anytime. You can sign up and get a free month. If you don’t like it, no problem because you can cancel. You aren’t locked in with a traditional contract with cable or satellite. Netflix has 3 packages to choose from Basic, Standard, and Premium.
- Basic: Watch on one screen at a time, watch on your TV, phone, computer, or tablet. Unlimited movies, and TV shows. $7.99 per month
- Standard: HD available, Watch on two screens at a time, watch on your TV, phone, computer, or tablet. Unlimited movies, and TV shows. $10.99 per month
- Premium: Ultra HD available, Watch on four screens at a time, watch on your TV, phone, computer, or tablet. Unlimited movies, and TV shows. $13.99 per month
Some of the popular Netflix Originals include:
- Orange is the New Black
- Stranger Things
- Santa Clarita Diet
- The Ranch
- Dave Chappelle
- Money Heist
- 13 Reasons Why
Opinion: A majority of people have Netflix, or have tried Netflix at some point. I like Netflix, however, I wish that some of the show I personally watch were available. So, Netflix comes down to personal choice really.
- Smart TV’s
- Some gaming Consoles
- Smart Phones
- Streaming Devices (like Roku or Amazon Firestick)
With Hulu, you can watch both shows and movies starting at $7.99 per month.
What you get: Choose from the $7.99 per month package or the $39.99 per month package.
$7.99 per Month: Get unlimited access to the Hulu streaming library with limited or no commercials. Enjoy full seasons of exclusive series, hit movies, Hulu Originals, kids shows, and more. You can also add on options like HBO, SHOWTIME, and CINEMAX. You can also get commercial free for $11.99 per month instead of $7.99.
$39.99 per Month: WIth this plan, you get Hulu with LIVE TV (currently in beta). Get unlimited access to the Hulu streaming library with limited or no commercials. Enjoy full seasons of exclusive series, hit movies, Hulu Originals, kids shows, and more. Watch Live TV online and on iOS, Android, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV (4th gen), Chromecast, and Xbox. Add-ons include HOB, SHOWTIME, and CINEMAX as well as, Enhanced Cloud DVR, and Unlimited Screens.
Opinion: I like the idea behind this, it’s better than Netflix when it comes to having the ability to watch LIVE TV. Again, it all comes down to personal preference. You can sign up for a 7-day free trial here.
- MAC & PC
- iPhone & Ipad
- Android Phone and Tablets
- Amazon Fire TV & Fire TV Stick
- Apple TV (4th generation)
- XBOX ONE and XBOX 360
- Samsung TV Models (select TV’s)
Roku is great for those who want to watch TV without paying each month for television services.
You can get your Roku Streaming Player starting at only $29.99
Only pay for subscription channels like Netflix, Sling TV, or movie and TV show rentals.
Watching Movies: To watch movies you can choose from free movie channels like Popcornflix or OVGuide. You can also connect your Netflix subscription to your Roku account or rent movies from VUDU.
Watching Sports: You can watch channels such as NFL, MLB, and FOX Sports Go. Some channels are free and others require a subscription.
Opinion: Another option for those who don’t watch tons of TV. I like that theirs no monthly fee unless you want to watch specific channels, movies, or shows.
- Choose your Roku player: You can choose from 5 different Roku Streaming devices, or you can choose a Roku TV. You can also stream directly to on your Smartphone or Tablet.
- After you choose your Roku device: Connect the Roku device to the internet, and create your Roku account!
Amazon Fire TV Stick
Similiar to the Roku device except you can watch Amazon Prime Video for free with your subscription. Which is great because a lot of people already have Amazon Prime.
How much does the Amazon Fire TV Stick Cost? Choose from the Fire TV Stick at only $39.99 or get the Fire TV for $69.99. What’s the difference?
- The Fire TV Stick supports: up to 1080p HD at 60fps, has a 1.3 GHz Quad-core processor, and Dolby Audio
- Fire TV supports: up to 4K Ultra HD at 60fps, 1.5 GHz Quad-core processor, and Dolby Atmos audio.
What do you get? Access Netflix, Hulu, Sling TV, HBO NOW, and Prime Video + MORE. You can also watch live TV.
How much is it per month? It depends on what you want really. If you pay for only Netflix it would only be the monthly Netflix cost. You only pay for the services you want. Nothing more.
Opinion: I think the Amazon Fire TV stick is one of my favorite choices on the list. Why? Because if you already have an Amazon Prime account and don’t watch much TV you don’t have to pay anything.
- Simple, you just plug the Fire TV stick into your HDTV, plug the other end into the outlet and you’re good to go!
Starting at only $20 per month you can choose the channels that you and your family get! This is better than paying for every channel available and only watching about 10% of what your package includes.
The $20 plan includes popular stations such as AMC (for you walking dead fans), ESPN, Disney, Lifetime, A&E, and the History Channel.
Want more stations? The next package available at $25 a month includes stations like Nick Jr, TruTv, and Bravo.
The most expensive package available is: $40 per month and includes: ESPN 1-3, and FreeForm
What else does SlingTv have to offer? You can add on a Kids Package for an additional $5 per month. You can also get 50 hours of DVR storage for $5 a month. Additionally, you can add on sports packages, A La Carte Premiums, Broadcast stations and much more!
- Amazon FireTV
- Xbox One
- AirTv Player
- Android TV
- Google Chrome
Still skeptical of SlingTv? You can try it risk-free for 7 days here!
Opinion: This is great for families or individuals that don’t watch much TV if you watch A LOT of TV then I would say this isn’t the best way to go financially. I also like that they have multiple delivery methods.
Watch Live and On-Demand shows without the giant satellite attached to your house. Also, you don’t have to worry about signing a contract!
What you get: Choose from 4 packages, the prices start at $35.00 for 60+ Channels, $50 for 80+ Channels, $60 for 100+ Channels, and $70 for 120 Channels.
DVR: DirecTV Now is currently in Beta mode with their True Cloud DVR you can record up to 20 Hours.
Multi-Streaming: Watch 2 different shows on 2 different devices, or a third for only $5 per month.
Opinion: I really like the idea behind DirecTV NOW. It’s perfect for those that want to watch Live TV. I also like that you don’t have to have a giant satellite to watch the shows you want. They are currently offering a 1-week free trial here.
- Amazon FireTV Stick
- Apple TV
- Google Chromecast
More Options to Consider
Not a TV person? If you only watch occasional movies, the best way to save would be Redbox. Things have changed with Redbox, you can rent Blu-Rays for $2.00, or DVD’s for $1.75 a night, Rent On Demand for $4.99, and Buy On Demand for $17.99. You can also rent video games for $3.00 a month. In some locations, you can even buy video games directly from the Redbox.
If you like different services or packages from any of the above you can combine multiple services to get exactly what you’re looking for. TIP: just be conscious of the total amount you’re paying when combining services.
Cut out TV altogether, and splurge by going to the movie theater every so often. This will still be cheaper (depending on how much you go) than paying for cable each month.
This is perfect for those people who love HBO shows. Shout out to you Game of Thrones fans! If you haven’t already, you can try HBO NOW for a month at no cost. Watch HBO NOW on your smartphone, tablets, gaming consoles, computers, Amazon FireTV Stick, Roku, and smart Tv’s.
If you’re into original shows YouTube Red has some to offer. They have plans starting at $9.99 per month, you can also sign up for a 1-month free trial.
